Information letter of the Russian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

V.N. Serov

Russian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Moscow, Russian Federation

Adequate intake of micronutrients by a pregnant woman, or a woman planning a pregnancy, is essential for the normal course of pregnancy and fetal development. According to the State Research Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the examination of women in Russia revealed that 70–80% of them suffer from polyhypovitaminosis, regardless of age, season, place of residence and professional occupation. Many authors in modern Russian international studies provide data on the adverse effects of micronutrient deficiency in pregnant women. In this publication, the consequences of vitamin and mineral deficiency during pregnancy and the ways of their replenishment are analyzed in detail. Data on the effectiveness of vitamin mineral complexes (VMC) in reducing the risk of complications of pregnancy, malformations of the fetus and adverse long-term consequences for the health of the child are presented. Additional intake of VMC is also essential during the lactation period, providing full breastfeeding and normal development of the baby in the first year of life. Among the VMCs, presented on the Russian market, the “Elevit” complexes are worth mentioning, because they contain the optimal amount of vitamins to meet the physiological needs of Russian women.

Keywords: polyhypovitaminosis, pregnancy, breastfeeding, congenital malformations, anemia, metafolin, vitamin mineral complex.
